Thread Title: ".221 FIREBALL IN A AR-15"

Any one here have that caliber in a ar-15 rifle. If so what barrel leanth and what kind of loads do you use and what do you get for velocity. I am thinking I want to put one together but not sure if I can deal with the lost brass in a semi auto. What's your thoughts.

I don't use it in an AR but in a bolt gun with a 24" barrel I use 15 grs. of lil gun with either the Hornady 40 gr. V max or Sierra 40 gr. blitz king.with that load I get sub minute groups out of a Remington 700 or a CZ

kraiger, if you want to use an AR platform, just get a brass catcher.-Capt"Jim"

I have a couple of uppers that are expensive as far as brass goes. One is the 450 Bushmaster and the other is a 6 x 45. I use a brass catcher at the range and if I was hunting I would try and find my spent case. There would only be one spent case cause , of course, all my hunting shots are one shot kills.

Same as HG. A friend of mine had a 221 Fireball bolt action rifle built on an XP action, one of the sweetest guns I ever shot or saw.

Sure wish I could have got that gun when he passed away.

Maybe he took it with him and is having a ball "up yonder".

I really don't see any advantage to chambering to the 221 fireball in an AR. It is a superb cartridge in a bolt rifle. Ballistics are similiar to a 222 with less powder usage. Why not an AR chambered in the Russian 5.45x39. Very similiar and loaded ammo is readily available and cheap. You are giving up velocity and versatility by going away from the 223.

I already have a AR-15 in .223 I just wanted to get rifle. And I have two AR-15 lowers that not sure what one is going to be one is going to be the .450 Bushmaster for sure.

Then try the 5.45x39. In the AK it really tames the recoil of the 7.62x39

221 fireball brass can be hard to get and loaded ammo is expensive.

That is some thing I am going to put some real thought into. 5.45X39 is cheep thanks Hanover. Will let everyone know what I do and how it works.
