Thread Title: "Medicare Legislation Would Raise Eligibility Age to 70"
Twelvette16

Republicans in the Senate announced reform legislation several weeks ago that would wind down Medicare and open the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) to all Medicare-eligible seniors.  The Congressional Health Care for Seniors Act (S.2196) introduced on March 15 by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and co-sponsored by Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Mike Lee (Utah) and Jim DeMint (S.C.) would allow all Medicare-eligibile patients to enroll in FEHBP plans beginning in 2014.  The existing Medicare program eventually would sunset.

According to Federal Daily, the legislation also gradually would increase the initial eligibility age for seniors over a period of 20 years from age 65 to 70, at a rate of three months per year.  The sponsors claim the plan would save $1 trillion over the first 10 years.

"Don't be fooled.  This proposal would end Medicare as we know it and threaten health benefits for federal employees," Ms. Easterling said.  "Given the current environment of severe budget cuts, we should all be very afraid of plans like this."

A republican sweep of the elections this fall would make this a reality. Don't complain if these newly proposed laws affect you adversely. It's for your own good.Wink

It's a matter of increasing healthcare costs and longevity, Twelvette.  We're living longer and health costs are spiraling upwards at a rate much faster than most other things.  I'm sure you know what the word "unsustainable" means.  In realistic terms when applied to this, it means that our children and their children will someday be working merely to support the healthcare system.  Raising the ages of Social Security and Medicare means less cost to the taxpayers over the long run - which is what we're getting as average ages before mortality climb.

The system was only designed to keep someone on Medicare for about 7 years.  Now it's much higher than that and is no longer affordable at the rates we're paying.

It's not a perfect world and no politician can make it that way, nor can you wish it so.  I don't know what kind of car you drive, but it's probably the best you can afford.  Yeah, I don't have a Mercedes, either.
