Thread Title: "Lead Foot"

Swedish motorist caught driving at 290km/h (180mph) in Switzerland could be given a world-record speeding fine of SFr1.08m ($1m; £656,000), prosecutors say.

The 37-year-old, who has not been named, was clocked driving his Mercedes sports car at 170km/h over the limit.

Under Swiss law, the level of fine is determined by the wealth of the driver and the speed recorded.

In January, a Swiss driver was fined $290,000 - the current world record.

Local police spokesman Benoit Dumas said of the latest case that "nothing can justify a speed of 290km/h".

"It is not controllable. It must have taken 500m to stop," he said.

The Swede's car - a Mercedes SLS AMG - has been impounded and in principle he could be forced to pay a daily fine of SFr3,600 for 300 days.

That system penalizes citizens by their "ability to pay". Which means, if you are rich you pay through the nose. If you are poor, (read average) you don't pay much at all!

Which results in many times increase of the rate of speeding violations amongst the middle and lower classes. Overall death rate by accident; climbs!!!

Socialism CAN'T WORK! -

Equal treatment under the law!!!!! Is the only way!!!!

brainaxe - The scaled fines do have a certain rationale to them.  The nominal idea behind a fine is to "make it hurt" so as to modify conduct.  If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't modify conduct, does it?  A fine which would make us think twice doesn't mean a thing to someone of great wealth because it's pocket change to him.  The whole idea is to make the violator blink and think so he doesn't do it again.

Oh. So it's not merely an excuse to boost the revenue stream for the STATE???

Yeah Right!

It's only about money. If they wanted to "make it hurt" they would jail the offender for a few years. But that would not generate any dough. In fact it would cost the STATE more.

I also thought the real nominal IDEA is to stop law breakers. And equal treatment under the Law.

"Oh. So it's not merely an excuse to boost the revenue stream for the STATE???"

Well, of course it is.  We wouldn't have such things as speed cameras were it not.  My point (which you evidently missed) was that there are those who are so wealthy that a fine which would modify our driving habits wouldn't even faze them.

And when you catch him driving without that license, you get to fine him even more ....

Okay, I was messing with you, but the point is that taking away the privilege stops nobody from driving.  The only way to stop someone who is reckless from driving is to put him in the calaboose, where very little driving is done.  Or you can fine him until it hurts and hope that will modify his conduct behind the wheel.

Of course, you can also summarily execute him on the spot - and brother, have I ever been tempted!

The main problem with all of this is the old addage,Once an A$$h**e always an A$$h**e. There  are those out there who have zero respect for the laws of the State that are in place to protect the public. I once arrested the same guy three times in TWO days for driving without a license.Another three times for DUI on three consecutive nights. The last two included numorous traffic tickets.I don't remember how many consecutive speeding tickets I have issued to the same people . The point is some are law breakers and nothing can be done about it short of life imprisonment. I am not a big fan of fines. They hurt the average working man and the elite let them run off their backs. You have to find a way to make it hurt but be fair. Glad it isn't my job.     Trapper

Perhaps taking a percentage of someone's income as a fair fine has some merit.  We condider this as fair when applied to income taxes, don't we?

5th, the STATE has NO interest in stopping speeders. The STATE has NO interest in "making it hurt" to stop speeders.
The ONLY interest of the STATE is "how to get more money."

If I have 100 million bucks, and a 1/2 million dollar car, how does it hurt me to pay a measly $300K if fines???

It doesn't!

The State does not want to stop speeders! Just the opposite. They want more speeders! OR a politically acceptable way to charge more $$$ per speeder!

If the State had ANY interest in stopping speeders, they would outlaw ANY vehicle capable of speeds over 65 mph!

Just like saying you can own a gun; -  just NOT a machine gun!!

If you kill someone with a firearm, the State does not 'fine' you! They JAIL you!

If the State wants to stop you from speeding (which they don't) they would JAIL you!

Equal treatment under the Law!!

Same with the seat belt law, just more revenue! They could care less if it saves lives.
