Thread Title: "Just Ain't No Pleasing Them, Fellers"
5thcommjarhead Today was the first day of gun season in the Free State and as soon as the sun peeked over the horizon, it sounded like a firefight in the precincts of Duninsane. Bullets was a-flyin' everywheres.

My bride was getting dressed to go out and she put on a buckskin suede coat. Now, I know that during hunting season the dairy farmers around these parts put big signs saying "COW" in big letters on their critters for safety's sake a'cause them city slicker "hunters" is right likely to shoot at ANYTHING - so I suggested she do the same.

I reckon it's a good thing we don't do that with the horses.

(no avatar) Yep, had a farmer up here do that and his cows were okay but some wiseass put a bullet into his John Deere tractor!

5thcommjarhead As much as I would have liked to have been hunkered down in the hoarfrost hunting for Bambi, there were so many of my Marine Corps League cohorts thus engaged that there were few of us left to man the local Toys 'R' Us for the Toys for Tots campaign. "Black Friday" and yesterday are bonanzas for toy collection and we were collecting toys from 8-8 Friday and 10-4 yesterday. We now have two pickup trucks loaded to the gunwales with toys for kids who wouldn't have much of a Christmas without us. By my count, we collected 453 toys and over $400 in cash with which to buy more over the two days. It takes a bit of schmoozing, cajoling, inveighling, imploring - call it what you will - to get people to donate and I'm pretty good at it. In fact, one of my partners there described me as "scary - but effective".

I may not have a rack to decorate The Cave this year, but a lot of kids are going to have a much better Christmas. I can live with that.

axolotl Jarhead; are you telling us that you attempted to put a "cow" sign on your wife. I`ll send some flowers but don`t expect me for your funeral. You have to sleep sometime. axolotl

5thcommjarhead ax - I've tried to tread very, very lightly about that subject since the reaction I got from her after mentioning to my bride that she needed to stop wearing black riding breeches because it was getting hard to tell her butt from the mare's. It was NOT the smartest thing I've ever said.

(no avatar) Two for 5th.comm.Jarhead: Hopefully you'll read this without any of the bombast I've started with your AA (auction arms- not my Alcoholics Anonymous weekly meetings) pals. Good on you Gyrene for the Toys For Tots- I do the same in our area, but in the background- as Jesus once said "When you do your good works, let not your right hand know what your left hand doeth!". I also support with $ the St. Jude's Christian Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN- also by anonymous donation. Father Flannigan, founder of Boy's Town in Nebraska once said "No man stands taller than when he bends down to help a child!". In another one of your replies I read about your teen-aged daughter and her near brush with death. I also belong to Suicide Survivors, two family members and also a USMC buddy who couldn't take the VA Hospital program and took himself out- much as did "Chesty" Puller's son USMC 1st. Lt. Lewis B. Puller Jr. Cancer and Suicide are the two scariest words I know. I am grateful to Our Lord that you didn't lose your gal- I have two grown gals, two grandkids and a third "on the way" ETA 30/April/08. If we meet and shoot this coming Summer when I'm visiting my sister in Mount Airy, maybe I'll open up more- as a strict practicing Roman Catholic, death by your own hand means you are never going to Heaven- scary thought, but that's Church Doctrine. Amen
