Thread Title: "Comments made in the year 1955"
Pappa Jim "I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20."

"Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2000 will only buy a used one."

"If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."

"Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"

"If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store."

"When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

"I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying 'damn' in 'Gone With The Wind,' it seems every new movie has either "hell" or "damn" in it .

"I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."

"Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the president."

"I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."

"It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."

"It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."

"I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."

There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel."

"No one can afford to be sick any more; $35 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."

"If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it."

(no avatar) i like to look back, but don,t want to go back. when i got out of the army in 1968 i went to work at a tire cord co. for 2.19 a hour. when i retired in 2005 i was making 26.50 plus 7.50 fringe on a drilling rig. in 1968 i made 87.60 a week,in 2005 when i retired i made 1360.00 a week plus all the over time i wanted. even with every thing costing more, i,m better off today. not to mention the advancements in health care. many who are alive today would not have made it in 1955. eastbank.

GMT My wages for my first job where 60 cents per hour warshing dishes and they took out 60 cents for a meal, I had to save the garnish parsley so they could re serve it, stamps of legal trout were saved so that they could put them on the ilegal ones the sport fishermen brought in [which were much better than the legal ones, raised in boored wholes in the ground at fish farms, and feed some kind of gruel that looked like dry dog food].

It was 6 days a week 4pm to 12 midnight with Monday's off. I got the job, because the other guy who had it stole tips, when he busted tables. My boss was a Greek named George, who wanted to make a cook out of me.

After I left that job it took me four or five years to be able to eat certain foods that were cooked in that gag and puke place, the 50's military was much worse, the cooks lived the good life off post and sold our food, we got fed sloppy WW # 11 canned rations.

Anything bought at the PX could turn a profit on the 50's French black market, being a greedy type and getting caught could get you stationed at Levenworth Kansas prison for a long strech, We used our black market profit to pay whores apartment rent in Paris France and buy decent food. Occasionaly and officer would want paperwork favor and would bribe us clerks with a meal, or a three day pass.
