Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Walther -- .25 caliber s Patent Model 8

Third variation right side says Waffenfbrik Zella-Mehlis . Zella-Mehlis is where the firearm was proofed the symbol is a heart with a fir tree. The proof showing a crown over N is semi smokeless powder. The mark F on the other side was probably who proofed the piece. There is slight pitting on the right side of the slide and a bit around the trigger guard. Blueing is probably 80%. The mechanics are excellent but a bit strange. The pistol is broken down by pulling down on the trigger guard and moving the slide back and up. The bakelite grips are held in place onn the left side by a screw which has control of the the propeller shaped toggle slipping into a slot fore and aft on the frame and is accessable through the right grip which is locked and released by the same shape in the same slots but by removing the magazine and moving the propeller out of the slots. Taking the gun apart was easy and checking the mechanical parts concluded all to be original and in proper working order. The pistol was produced from 1920 to 1939 when the model 9 came into production leading to the HP's theh the P-38 and on to the pp's and James Bond favorite the PPK. These are not common and the grip retainers not one of Wather's greatest Ideas. As the right grip is loose from probably years of handling I am starting the price below blue book value. The Model 8 appeared in 1920 on the market and was of big success immediately. The new pistol not only looked fashionable, but also had a lot of new construction details, which got practical for many of the pistols following after. By that this model by good reasons may be addressed as predecessor of the PP oder PPK.
Because of that reason together with this model a lot of patents were issued:
The new pistol was favorite at many different official institutions and the demand for this new modern pistol was enormous. From the technical point of view there were three main variations produced, where the first, the earliest one, had the patented firing-pin casing with internal extractor, and the movable trigger-guard was held by a small latch at the right front side of the trigger guard.
The production lasted on to the end of the protected patent-period in the year of 1943, where in total about 500.000 pcs. were made. The numbering was done together with the other models produced at Walther at that time. Still, in spite of the end of production in 1934, this pistole was offered in many gun-catalogues up to 1939/40.
History:

At the third and last variation the movable trigger-guard was held in position by a strong spring instead the latch at the side.
The change took place around serial no. 715.000 and this variation was produced up to about serial no. 750.000 and since 1939 from about 90.000A to 100.000A.
