Gun: This gun is a Colt model 1878 Double Action Frontier Six Shooter. The caliber is .44-40 and the barrel length 4 ¾”. The serial number, stamped on the butt, is 39920. The gun has Colt hard rubber grips, showing the Colt logo. The barrel is marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” on the left side of barrel, with the Colt address on the top. The assembly number “216” is stamped on the loading gate. The action is strong and locks up tight when the hammer falls. The year of manufacture is 1898.
Condition: The bore is good, with about 80% visible rifling, some pitting, but mostly free of metal loss. The gun retains approx. 60% original finish, with some scattered erosion and wear. The wear is concentrated to the ejector rod housing and the backstrap/frontstrap. The erosion is concentrated on the ejector rod housing and only about 2 locations on the frame. The grips are dark brown and fit nicely. There are no losses or chips. The small parts are fire blued, and this finish is still visible on several parts.
This is one of the better condition 1878 Revolvers that we have seen, and this one should be sought after for any Colt collection.
