Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - J.C.HIGGINS SEARS -- Model 583.16 12 ga. 2 Bolt Action Shotgun

J.C. Higgins Model 583.16 12 ga. 2 ¾” Bolt Action Shotgun

This gun is in very good condition. Mechanically tight, operates smoothly and shows minimal wear. The bore is clean and shinny, no rust or corrosion. There are some small areas of light pitting due to surface rust and a few small dings but overall the blue finish is very good (~90%+). The stock has some bruises, a couple of nicks and a very repairable crack developing at the fore end (see photos). The original finish is still very good. The original J.C.Higgins recoil pad has been replaced. The full choke barrel length is 22”, the LOP 13 ¾” and the magazine capacity is 5 rounds.

HISTORY - These bolt action shotguns were made between 1945/46 and 1956. Internet research indicates these bolt action shotguns were originally made by H&R (Models 120/121/348/349/351, same basic design). Sears bought the rights to the design around 1948 and then they were manufactured for Sears by High Standard. They were marketed under the Sears trademarked J.C.HIGGINS label and known as the Sears/J.C.Higgins Model 10. The guns were marked Model 583.1 thru 583.25 for different gages, barrel lengths & features, etc. The 583.1 thru 583.12 were made by H&R and 583.12 thru 25 were made by High Standard. There is much misinformation about these bolt action guns as a result of Sears doing a recall on them (H&R never recalled theirs). The recall was caused by one incident were the user was hit in the face buy the bolt. Sears, being wary of a lawsuit, did a recall. No gun ever blew up, they are safe to shoot and numerous certified gunsmiths have attested as such. The bolt on these guns is locked in the receiver buy a screw in the side of the receiver (you have to loosen the screw to remove the bolt). The user allowed the screw to come loose and when he pulled the while holding the gun in the shooting position he hit himself in the face/eye with the bolt. Human error, not a gun problem.

We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment with us from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction if the high bidder does not reach the reserve buy to end the auction the high bidder or the seller may institute what Auction Arms calls a Haggle a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the Haggle process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.

We are GOLDEN BEAR SERVICES, INC., a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer. We list on our auctions a variety of offerings including firearms, ammunition, reloading tools & supplies and other accessories we pick up from clients who are interested in liquidating their firearms collections. We are also stocking dealers in a variety of “Mil Spec” manufacturers of quality AR15 & AR10 firearms and accessories including Uppers, Lowers, Parts Kits, barrels, stocks, mags, complete firearms and anything else we think you might be interested in.

Buyer is solely responsible for determining that a used gun is safe to shoot. The firearms offered have not been test fired. Whether purchased here or somewhere else we urge every buyer to have any used firearm they purchase inspected by a qualified gunsmith before firing.
