This is an all original Civil War issued 5th Model Burnside carbine. The Burnside is a .54-caliber, percussion,
single-shot, breechloading weapon that used a tapered or cone shaped brass cartridge which contained the bullet and powder.
Modern components for making ammunition are available from different sources such as S&S Firearms in Glendale, NY and
Lodgewood Mfg. at lodgewood.com.
Both the 4th and 5th Model Burnsides were called the Model 1863 by the Ordnance Department and although the 5th Model carries
an 1864 date stamp, they were actually issued beginning in 1863! The final orders of Burnside carbines were shipped to the
Govenment in August 1864 when soon after the Burnside Company began producing Spencer rifles for the Army.
The 5th Model is distinguished by a large breech block guide screw on the center of the right hand side of the receiver and
until just the past few years it was called the 4th Model by most collectors. The Burnside carbine was one of the "Big 3"
carbines used during the Civil War and was used by both Union and Confederate units. 43,940 carbines were issued between 1863
and August 1864. The serial number on this Burnside is 16003 and is found on both the Breech block and top of the receiver.
The top front of the receiver is stamped in 2 seperate lines: "BURNSIDE PATENT" / "MODEL OF 1864" then the serial
number "16003" is stamped on a 3rd line.
The right side lockplate is stamped in 2 lines : "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./ PROVIDENCE =R.I." There is the letter "W" stamped
near the far left edge of the lock plate
The top of the breech block is stamped with the matching serial number "16003"
The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is stamped "STEEL 1864"
The top of the barrel between the rear sight and the start of the receiver is stamped with the letter "R"
The left side of the receiver is stamped with the letter "P"
The left side of the stock has 2 sharp cartouches with the inspectors letters of "EPR" and "RKW"
The buttplate has the letter "P" stamped near the top buttplate screw
The trigger guard is marked with the letter "W" near the rear guard screw
The rear sight base is stamped with the letter "W" while the sight leaf is stamped eith the numerals "5" and "3"
The front half as well as the rear half of the lever assembly are both stamped with the letter "R"
This Burnside carbine is all original in fully functioning, working condition and is shootable with the proper
ammunition. The lock is crisp and the action lockup is tight with absolutely no play. The bore's rifling is strong and has
some light sporadic pitting. The 21" barrel has retained most of its original blue finish. The receiver has turned a greyish
patina with areas of the original blue still showing. The hammer is greyish patina and the lever retains its original blue.
The buttplate has turned a grey patina. The rear receiver tang retains its original blue. The wood has no cracks or missing
pieces nor any repairs. The wood overall is nice and its evident that this carbine has not been abused. The buttstock and
forend exhibits just a few very small dings. All screw head slots are in great condition and are NOT "buggered up." The
saddle ring and bar are present and have turned a grey patina.
This is a very nice original and shootable, issued Civil
War carbine for the collector or the reenactor.
