(#9A) This is a Remington Model 1897 Rolling Block Rifle, caliber 7MM.-S.M. (Spanish Mauser) that has been "sporterized" by removing the upper handguard and a portion of the forend. The 30" barrel is uncut and the rifle has the following issues:
The rear sight is missing; the barrel is pitted where the removed portion of the forend and the handguard covered that part of the barrel; the bore is rusty and pitted; the Lock Plate or "Button" is broken and the Rolling Block action has to be "jiggled" to open the action to eject or reload.
On the plus side, the stock is in very good condition with no cracks, splits or repairs and the hammer firmly cocks and locks. The mechanical condition, with the exception of the ejector problem, is excellent.
The upper tang is stamped "Remington Arms Company, Ilion, N.Y." and under that are two barely visible lines of Patent Dates from May 31st 1864 to March 18th 1874. The steel buttplate is stamped with what appears to be a British Proof Mark and the numbers "3778", which I assume is a serial number, maybe for this rifle and maybe not.
This model was produced from 1897 until 1915 and since I have been unable to pinpoint the exact date of manufacture, An FFL or C&R License will be required to ship.
This rifle is part of an estate gun collection that I am selling and the best possible use for the old rifle will be over a fireplace mantle.
Please be certain that this rifle is legal to own in your locality before placing a bid.
