Unusual Antique Colt Model 1889
UNCONVERTED. 4.5” barrel.
Earliest of the Colt "swingout" cylinder models, using the cylinder lockup of the earlier Model 1878 is this Colt 1889 Navy Model revolver.
Referencing R. L. Wilson's Book of Colt Firearms it is stated that Serial numbers 1 through 8000 inclusive were U.S. Government purchases however this is the commercial variation of the caliber .38 gun adopted by the U.S. Navy.
This 4.5” barreled gun is most unusual in that the company markings, barrel address
and patent dates are rolled UPSIDE DOWN ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF BARREL INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL LOCATION ON TOP. Unfortunately this gun sat in a safe where it got rusted and pitted as we can see from images.
The hard rubber grips however are near perfect and the gun is mechanically sound and the bore just a bit frosty.
