Seller's Description

Original Remington M-1863 .58 cal. Zouave Rifle

This is an original, authentic Remington M-1863 Zouave .58 caliber percussion rifle. During the American Civil War the US government contracted with the Remington Arms Company of Ilion, NY to produce 12,500 improved version rifles of the Harper’s Ferry M-1855 pattern. The M1863 Zouave featured 7 groove rifling and eliminated the Maynard Tape Priming system. These rifles were only made between late 1862 and 1864 are considered by many collectors and shooters to be the nicest of the Springfield-style percussion rifles ever produced.

The rifle is in nice condition with the finish having turned a smooth gray patina that is pit-free. The lock plate has had the case coloring fade or wear away and it has some minor surface pitting. The lock plate is stamped 1863 to the rear of the hammer, and a Spread-Winged Eagle is stamped over U.S. forward of the hammer. The lock is also marked REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y. and also bears an L inspector's stamp as does the hammer. The lock functions very crisply on all positions and works exactly as it should.

The breech of the 33" barrel is stamped with V P, an eaglehead, and the date of 1863. The left barrel flat near the breech is stamped STEEL and the inspector's initials H.S.L. The initials are that of of Homer S. Lathe who worked as an armory sub- inspector, inspecting the barrels of Remington M-1863 rifles. The bore of the rifle has no pitting that I can detect although the outside crown edge of the muzzle has some pitting. The seven-groove rifling is sharp. This Zouave comes with its ramrod but the two swivels on the barrel band and front trigger guard are missing.

The original bayonet lug, the multi-leaf rear sight and the front sight are present and tight. The original nipple is present. The brass barrel bands, trigger guard, buttplate and patch box all bear some minor dings that one would expect to see on a gun that is of this age and which has seen use. The two brass barrel bands are stamped with a U. The brass buttplate tang is stamped US and it and the brass pach box are stamped with a C inspector's mark. The trigger guard is stamped with a P.

The stock is in good condition with no cracks or repairs. The stock does show a number of scattered dings and handling marks. The stock is well marked with two armory inspectors cartouches. One is an HDJ, for Henry D Jennings, a Springfield Armory inspector who inspected Remington M-1863 rifles the other is BH, for Benjamin Hannis who inspected revolvers as well as Remington rifles.

Here is an opportunity to pick up a nice example of an original Civil War rifled musket either for your collection or to shoot.

Please notice my $25.00 shipping, insurance, and handling charge which is in addition to your bid on this musket and take that in to consideration when entering your maximum bid that you are willing to place.
