This is a nice Carcano Moschetto 38 TS, “Per Truppe Speciale” carbine in 6.5x52 Carcano caliber, complete with bayonet and scabbard. The TS carbine was issued to engineers, artillerymen, and other troops who didn’t need the longer rifle. This gun has a very sound stock in good condition, no cracks or splits, no repairs. The metalwork is in good shape, and the bore is good; though there is some frosting in the grooves, it is completely shootable and will likely clean up better. The serial number on the action and the stock match. There is no serial number on the bolt, which is in the white, as is correct for Carcanos. The butt plate is blued steel and in excellent condition. I have not had this rifle apart and don't know what if any marks may be under the handguard. There is an original cleaning rod present in its channel. The rear trigger guard screw is buggered (see photo).
The bayonet is in good shape though it’s greasy and needs to be cleaned. The handles on the bayonet have gouges at the end, looks like someone used it for a hammer, but the handles aren’t loose. The bayonet is serial numbered but doesn’t match the rifle number. The guard is stamped “C. GNUTTI=1941,” the maker’s name and date. Scabbard is not serialized, and is in very good shape without significant dents and it retains much of its original black paint.
Carcanos are “sleeper” collectibles, and the supply of unmodified ones with matching numbers is drying up, get this one for your collection while you can. Norma and a couple of other makers can supply the correct ammunition for this rifle, and it can be used as a hunting carbine as is: the 6.5x52 round is a very fine deer and black bear caliber, comparable in performance to the other 6.5mm calibers.
