This is a Colt AR-15 Model SP1 chambered in 223 REM. (5.56mm) caliber. The SP-1 is the original Colt paramilitary configuration without a forward bolt assist. This SP1 is a Pre-Ban gun with a bayonet lug and caged flash suppressor. The gun comes with a B.M. CO. bayonet sheath and US 7 bayonet, two Colt factory 20 rd magazines, a 5-round magazine spacer, it's original operation and maintenance manual and original cardboard box. These AR-15 style guns were manufactured between 1963 and 1984. We were unable to determine the exact year this SP1 was manufactured, but the operation manual that comes with the gun is printed A 5-71, which puts the gun at '71 or a bit later.
The chrome lined barrel measures just over 21" out the end of the caged flash suppressor. The bore is in excellent condition with crisp rifling. The internals of the gun are also in excellent condition. There is an A-2 upper (non-removable carry handle) on the gun. The carry handle is parkerized with the rest of the metal on the gun matte black. There are some handling marks on the gun with the sides of the receiver and the barrel having a few scratches, the most noticeable scratch being on the left-side of the receiver (see photos). There's also a couple of small nicks in the top of the carry handle (see photos). None of the scratches or nicks in the handle are bad and the appearance of the gun is very good. There are no cracks in the synthetic hand-guard, pistol grip or buttstock, although there are a few light scratches in the hand-guard and buttstock.
Both the front and rear sights are adjustable. The front sight is adjustable for elevation only, the rear sight is adjustable for windage only. As mentioned, the gun comes with a B.M. CO. bayonet sheath and US 7 bayonet, two Colt 20 round magazines, a 5-round magazine spacer, operation and maintenance manual, original cardboard box and nylon sling. The bayonet sheath is olive drab and has a nylon strap with a handle snap. The throat of the bayonet sheath is stamped "US M8A1" with "B.M. CO." below. The bayonet has a parkerized finish with black hard-plastic handles. There are a few handling marks in the sheath blade cover, otherwise the sheath is in good condition with all the stitching intact on the nylon strap. The finish on the sides of the bayonet shows some wear, and there's a few nicks in the plastic handles, but overall the bayonet is also in good condition (see photos).
The cardboard box is a bit beat-up with a tear in the front of the box and one of the ends torn off. There's also some tape marks in the top, sides and bottom of the box with some light damage to the box in spots from the tape being torn off. It appears to be the original box for the gun, however there is no writing on the box except for a stamp on the top with Patent numbers (see photos). The edges of the instruction manual have discolored from age, otherwise it's in good condition with no rips or tears (see photos).
Overall the gun is in excellent condition mechanically and very good to excellent in appearance. Serial #SP18972. STK. #13742.
Here's a nice original Pre-Ban Colt from back in the day. If you are looking for an AR-15 style rifle, this SP-1 with it's operation manual and two Colt magazines would make an excellent choice.
