Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Manhattan Firearms Company -- MANHATTAN 36 CAL. NAVY STYLE PERCUSSION PISTOL

HOWDY, THIS IS AN INTERESTING OLD PIECE. MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO NEWARK N.J. PATENTED MARCH 8, 1864. IT IS A COLT PERCUSSION 36 STYLE. IT HAS A 5 INCH BARREL. MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS WAS STARTED IN 1856 IN NEW JERSEY AND MOVED TO NEWARK IN 1859. THEY MADE A TOTAL OF 175,000 ARMS. THEY OPENED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXPIRING COLT PATENTS. ONLY COLT AND WINCHESTER AND REMINGTON MADE MORE ARMS DURING THIS PERIOD. THIS HAS BEEN IN THE SAFE OVER 30 YEARS. THE PISTOL IS A BLUE 36 CAL PERCUSSION. THE GRIPS ARE A ONE PIECE WALNUT LIKE THE COLTS WOULD BE. THE BUTT IS NUMBERED 21478 AND THE TRIGGER GUARD IS NUMBERED 21478 AND THE FRAME IS NUMBERED 21478. THIS NUMBER SHOULD INDICATE A MODEL 3 PISTOL. THE BARREL IS NUMBERED 51612 AND SHOULD INDICATE A MODEL 4 PISTOL. THERE WERE 78,000 PRODUCED BETWEEN 1859 AND 1868. I WOULD ASSUME THIS TO BE EARLY TO MID RANGE ON DATING. PISTOL IS 10 ½ INCHES LONG AND WEIGHT IS 28.2 OUNCES. SILVER BLADE FRONT SIGHT. I DO NOT HAVE A CLUE ON HOW TO GRADE THE GUN, ALL I CAN DO IS TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW. THE BRASS SEEMS COMPLETE AND HAS A LOT OF SCRATCHES, KIND OF LIKE WHAT I WOULD EXPECT ON A 140 YEAR OLD GUN. I THINK THE WALNUT GRIPS ARE BEAUTIFUL CAUSE I AM A CHARACTER COLLECTOR, I JUST WISH IT COULD TALK!! THE WALNUT HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLOR AND PATINA LIKE IT WAS USED AND CARRIED A LOT AND NOT ABUSED. THE STEEL LOOKS GOOD BUT DOES HAVE LIGHT PITTING AND METAL DETERIORATION. THE SCREWS ALL LOOK BURRED LIKE SOMEONE ALWAYS HAD THE WRONG SIZE SCREWDRIVER. THEY ALL SEEM CONSISTENTLY MUTILATED. THE CYLINDER SHOWS QUITE A BIT OF METAL DETERIORATION BUT THE NIPPLES LOOK GOOD TO ME. I DO NOT THINK IT WAS EVER ENGRAVED. THE CYLINDER NOTCHES STILL SEEM TO BE PRETTY CLEAN. THE HAMMER COCKS AND FIRES BUT THE CYLINDER DOES NOT TURN AND LOCK. I AM SURE I COULD HAVE IT FIXED BUT I WOULD FEEL BETTER IF THE NEW OWNER DID IT. THE LOADING LEVER AND CATCH AND LATCH AND RAMMER LOOK BEAUTIFUL AND SHOW BROWNING BUT NO DETERIORATION. ALMOST LIKE IT WAS LATER THAN THE PISTOL. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THIS WAS A WAY COOL OLD PISTOL AND WOULD LOVE TO KNOW ITS HISTORY. SORRY TO SAY IT WILL NOT TALK TO ME AND NOW IT IS TIME FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO CARE FOR IT FOR A WHILE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS. TEX
