This is a U.S. Remington Model 03-A3, .30-06 bolt-action rifle. As a result of design changes and production adjustments in May of '42, a new rifle was authorized by the U.S. Government which resulted in the Remington 1903A3. The Model 03-A3 remained in production until the end of WWII.
This gun has a scant grip stock with a hand guard and stacking swivel mounted at front end of the stock, behind the bayonet lug. The stacking swivel and front swivel are marked with "R". The rear swivel mount is also marked with "R". The top-front of the barrel has Remington's barrel markings "RA" with the Flaming Bomb and punch mark with "2-43". There is also a "P" proof mark and an "I" stamped on the bottom of the barrel. There are no import stamps on the barrel. The receiver ring is marked "U.S Remington Model 03-A3 with a serial number of 3439196". The top of the bolt handle is marked with appears to be a "3" and the bottom of the bolt handle is marked with "R" in two places (see photos).
The gun has a parkerized finish while the bolt is blue. The gun still retains 80-90% of it's original finish. Some of the finish is scratched and worn on the sides of the barrel and front sight ring base. There are a couple of scratches and a small nick in the floor plate, otherwise the metal is in very good condition (see photos).
It appears that the stock has been refinished. The refinish job is not too bad. The stock has some handling marks here and there with a few divots and scratches but no cracks. The inspector marks that are normally stamped on the bottom-side of the stock have been mostly covered up when the stock was refinished. There are a few illegible stamps in front of the floor plate and the circle "P" is barely visible under the refinish job. The finish is gone from the buttplate and there is some surface rust on the buttplate. A 1" military-style leather sling is mounted on the gun. There are no markings on the stamped floor plate and trigger guard (see photos).
The Remington 03-A3 uses a front flat sight in a ring base and an adjustable wing-type rear sight which is mounted at the rear of the receiver. There don't appear to be any stamps on the front sight ring base or sight. The rear sight has windage and elevation marks on it but no other stamps (see photos).
The bore in the 24" barrel is in very good condition with crisp rifling and no signs of pitting. We did not test-fire this gun, however the gun has good headspace (the bolt does not close on a no-go gauge) and the action is smooth and closes tight. Throat erosion is .003" and muzzle erosion is .002".
Overall the gun is in excellent condition mechanically and very good in appearance. Serial #3439196. STK. #12588.
This 03-A3 is in great shape and would definitely make a good shooter. If you're a fan of these military guns, this one we have here would be a good choice to pick-up as a range shooter or Saturday afternoon shooter at the club.
