Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - German GEW 98 Mannlicher Style -- Rifle, 8mm, Danzig 1917, C&R OK

This is a GEW 98 Mauser, marked Danzig, 1917, that has a Mannlicher style stock of obvious military origins. I do not know if this is an original of some kind or what, but it is VERY nice. The bolt does not match the gun. The wood is very good with no cracks, and has a beautiful tiger stripe figure as shown. The bore is very good with a light frost. The action works very well and still has alot of cosmolene in it. There are no import marks. The entire gun looks factory, but I have not been able to find references on it. All of the fitments look original, right down to the forend cap, and crown on the barrel. This gun is an 8mm. This gun is also C&R eligible.

Questions for Users
(Public)
Q:  Do you know the specific cartridge for this gun. I think one of 3: 7.92x57mm , 8mm Mauser, or 8x57mm Mauser but am not knowledgeable enough to know. 04/23/2008
A:  All three of these designations refer to the same cartridge. Thanks for looking! Cheers! Tom 04/23/2008

Q:  Just wondering, How old of a firearm is still OK to shoot modern ammunition? I'm more concerned with a rifle than a shotgun. I figure WWII or 1938 and after ok But do you know? Thanks 04/25/2008
A:  There is no real rule of thumb, as each should be on a case by case basis. Best to have it checked by a guunsmith first before shooting. I guarantee all of my guns to be shootable, unless specifically stated in the auction, or in my shop. Cheers! 04/25/2008

(Public)
Q:  does it have the "roller coaster" rear sight? Thanks! 04/26/2008
A:  The last photo shows the sight pretty well, as it is a "tangent" sight, also known as the roller coaster. 04/26/2008

Q:  I think the first person was asking you if the rifle uses .318, .321, or .323 8mm and 8x57 are not necessarily the same. 04/26/2008
A:  Can't say as to the diameter of the barrel as per your description. HOWEVER, 8mm Mauser, as sold commercially by all the major manufacturers, 7.92x57, and 8x57 Mauser are the same as far as I have EVER encountered. There ARE several differing 8mm bullet diameters, but as applies to the German military 8mm, (generic), Mauser loading, they are all one in the same, as far as I can tell. Cheers! 04/26/2008
