This is a Pre-WWII Winchester Model 70, bolt-action rifle chambered in .22 HORNET. This particular gun was manufactured in 1941. This rifle has a 24" round barrel and checkered Walnut pistol grip stock. The bore is in excellent condition. The top of the receiver at the rear has been drilled and tapped and a Weaver Model 330 scope, rings and base is mounted on the gun. This was done when the gun was fairly new considering the age of the scope and mounts, but not sure when. The scope and base is in good condition with about 80% or better blue. The sides of the scope are starting to show some patina, otherwise the finish is in good condition (see photos). The scope has a post reticle and the optics are clear and bright. The rear sight has been cut and made into a sight blank (see photos).
Blue on the gun is original and is about 80%-90% and starting to thin a bit. There are a few small scratches in the barrel and the blue is worn from the muzzle. There is also some very minor rust pitting spots on the right-side of the barrel, just in front of the receiver, otherwise the metal is in very good condition for the age of this gun. Most of the blue is gone from the trigger guard and it has turned patina, but there is 80% or more blue on the floor plate (see photos).
As mentioned, the gun has a checkered Walnut pistol grip stock with it's original finish. The stock has some handling marks with some divots and scratches. Some of the scratches are a bit below the surface, otherwise the stock still retains a nice shine and looks good (see photos). There are no cracks in the stock. The gun has it's original steel buttplate. The buttplate retains about 50-60% blue with a few spots of rust pitting, but overall the buttplate is in good condition. The gun has front and rear sling swivels with a 1" military-style leather sling. The sling is a bit worn from age, but still quite functional. There is no box or papers for this gun.
I am the second owner of this rifle and have owned it for the last 10 years. The original owner was an older gentleman who purchased it new in 1941, and he sold it to me because of his failing health. I have not fired this gun, it has been in my safe since I bought it.
Overall this Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 is in excellent condition mechanically and good to very good in appearance. Serial #37749.
This Pre-War Model 70 would make an excellent gun for restoration or you could keep it all original just as it is! Here's another piece of Winchester history that would make a great addition to your collection. Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 22 Hornets are very rare, let alone a Pre-War 70 in 22 Hornet so don't miss out on this beauty!
