Here's one of our shooters that's a fixer-up. We test fired the gun and it functions properly. This gun would make an O.K. shooter just the way it is or if you wanted to put the time and effort into the gun, it would be a decent candidate for restoration.
This is a Cooey Model 840, 410 single-shot shotgun. The Model 840 is a Post
1961 shotgun made by Winchester of Ontario, Canada. This single-shot shotgun has a 26" barrel chambered for 2-1/2" & 3" shells. The barrel is marked FULL CHOKE. The bore is smooth and shows some shine, but does have rust pitting at the muzzle. Overall the bore is in fair to good condition. The Model 840 has a top-lever, break-open action with an exposed hammer and extractor/ejector. The tang lever is a bit loose but is just to the right of center, so the gun is reasonably tight and locks securely.
Blue on the barrel is about 40-50% with rust pitting on the barrel. The heaviest pitting is on the front of the barrel between the muzzle and the forearm. It appears that someone tried to remove the rust with a wire wheel and possibly some solvent, subsequently the blue has been removed from this area of the barrel (see photos). There is also some rust pitting near the breech end of the barrel, but it's not as deep as the pitting towards the front (see photos). The receiver has about 60-70% blue with some scratches and a some surface rust (see photos). There are also a couple of small nicks in the top of the receiver where the right-side meets the top (see photos).
The gun has an uncheckered hardwood, semi-beavertail forearm and hardwood buttstock. Some of the finish is worn or scratched-off of the forearm and there are numerous scratches and divots, but no
cracks in the forearm. Some of the finish is also worn and scratched-off of the buttstock, mostly around the edges of the buttplate and toe. The scratches are not too deep and there are no
cracks in the buttstock (see photos). The gun has it's original plastic Winchester buttplate which is in good condition. L.O.P. is 14-1/4".
Overall the gun is in good condition mechanically and fair in appearance. We test-fired one shell in the gun and it fired and ejected the shell just fine. Serial #818498. STK.#10813.
Here's a single-shot 410 that would make a decent project gun and is a fun gun to shoot. If you're a Winchester collector, this Cooey would be a unique gun to add to your collection!
