Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. -- Civil War Carbine 56 Spencer Carbine Many Extra's

(Dave White)VERY NICE OLD ORGIANL SPENCER CIVIL WAR CARBINE FOR SALE AS DESCRIBED BY OWNER! This is a Civil War 56 - 56 Spencer. These are actually 52 caliber. (The ones delivered at the end of the war, usually with a Stabler cut off, are 50 cal.) Anyway a friend of mine bought this one from Bannerman's, or what was left of it, in about 1949 in New York. I think he paid like 10 - 15 dollars for it. 20 or 25 years ago he gave it to me. Going with it is a centerfire breech block from S&S firearms, installed, a spare magazine spring, a set of loading dies for the 56-56 Spencer, 18 new unused turned centerfire brass cartridge cases from Cody Wyoming I got from the Ballard Rifle Works there. The man making cases is still in Cody although it is a separate operation from the rifle works. I see his advertisements in magazines like the Black Powder Cartridge News, Single Shot Exchange etc. I fired it a few times with black powder loads. I discovered that Spencers depend critically on overall cartridge length and bullet shape as far as feeding from the magazine is concerned. The original rimfire loads have a long very pointed bullet and function perfectly through the magazine. My loads with a blunt bullet and cut off 50-70 brass were some what Iffy. A little experimentation should overcome this. ( Bore and chamber is still Good+ Strong Lands and groves, But has its Dark bore with some Pitting in Bore but Considering its age its Still very Nice and Makes a Good Shooter Besides A Collector's Piece! Also Comes with it original rimfire block. As I recall you only have to take out one screw to take out the works and interchange breech blocks. I fired it a few times with black powder loads. I discovered that Spencers depend critically on overall cartridge length and bullet shape as far as feeding from the magazine is concerned. The original rimfire loads have a long very pointed bullet and function perfectly through the magazine. My loads with a blunt bullet and cut off 50-70 brass were somewhat iffy. A little experimentation should overcome this. Also with it is the original rimfire block of course. Rifle is in Good Condtion as described and Pictured and Mechinally also. Metal finish as you can see is Mostly gone, With some Patena on receiver, has many scratches and marks and some very fine light pitting on receiver,Still Locks up nice and Tight, Rear Ladder sight folds up and is also nice and tight. Stock is Walnut and orginal with its Steel buttplate and tube magazine and spring are in good condtion. Stock finish is still good but many marks scratches and light dings. Also has a Weather Crack along the left side of Buttstock about 2 inches long but not all the way arcoss stock Still Sound as fire as shooting. I decided to sell it so some genuine antique collector can have and love it. I intend to take part of the proceeds and buy a Taylor Arms 56-50 replica which I can fire without feeling guilty. The only markings I found were on top of the receiver ring, where they should be and as near as I can tell they say what Flayderman says the should say---Spencer Repeating Rifle CO. Boston. Mass.patd Mar 6, 1860 But Printing on top of receiver is very weak. Pretty worn Lettering and hard to read. Perhaps there should be a serial number someplace but I never located it. The Standard Catalog of Firearms Values says they are worth $1750 in fair condition and $ 4500 in good condition. So here you go a Shooter and a Collectores Piece! NO FFL OR C&R NEEDED Antique BUT Need a Copy of Drivers License and Signed statement OK to Own, Shipping UPS? Insured in Lower 48 Staes in Doskocil Rifle Hard Case is 40.00
