Pre-WW I US M1903 Springfield Rifle, manufactured Rock Island Arsenal. Cal 30-06. SN 236XXX proper for barrel date 7-13. EX+ condition with all original finishes metal and wood. Receiver retains most of black oil-quenched final finish from case hardening process as described p.543 Brophy; cocking piece and safety retain traces of color from case hardening. Rest of metal finishes exceptionally nice with almost no flaws except slight normal wear, and blue loss on both sides of front sight band from front sight cover, and small area of tiny pits on receiver bridge. Bore is EX, bright, shiny and with sharp rifling, smooth with no apparent frost and very little wear. Bolt safety lug marked C 13, bolt face shows trace primer pocket ring. Rear sight has no defects, functions flawlessly, has #5 peephole aperture. Barrel steel mfg and lot C 88. Rifle is completely original as manufactured in all aspects with all expected features of end of 1st RIA production run (1904 - 1913) such as sharp checkered buttplate, split shank lower band swivel, groove for cocking piece in spare parts container recess in buttplate, thicker serrated trigger, and proper large 'S' on fore end tip. Beautiful straight grained streaky walnut stock has single reinforcing screw, is not sanded, stripped, or refinished in any way, has few minor mars from handling. Sharp, deeply struck cartouches script 'CN' on left side and script 'P' at bottom of wrist. Screw slots all crisp and tight, most appear unturned; I have never removed action or tiggerguard/floorplate from stock. This is an exceptionally nice collector grade piece which would be very difficult to upgrade. I do not disclose reserve, so please dont ask. Several other photos available. Thanks for looking.
