This is a Iver Johnson Champion in 12ga. FAR from your run of the mill Champion. Iver Johnson & Co. first manufactured single barrel shotguns (10 and 12 gauge) in Worcester, MA, but discontinued this just before the company moved to Fitchburg, 1892. In Fitchburg the manufacture was resumed, of a single barrel hammer shotgun, the "Side Snap," said to be the first single breech loading gun ever made with the hammer set in the center of the tang on the frame. It was furnished in plain steel or with twist Damascus barrel, frame and fittings nickel plated. The company manufactured both single and double barrel shotguns until the end of WWII, thereafter only single barrel shotguns. This is an early model with damascus steel barrel and the neat side snap style opening mechanism. It has a 30 inch barrel with a modified choke. Bore is still quite shiny but has peppery pitting mostly in the first 1/3 from the breach. Very shootable using black powder loads of course. Outside of barrel showing approx. 50% damascus pattern in what I believe to be original brown. Or the blue turned brown. Still appealing to the eye at any rate. top of barrel marked PAT. JULY 20 '86 CHAMPION PAT MAY 10 '87. Original nickle finished receiver is 98% with some very few specks of pitting underneath. Mirror finish. Forearm hardware is also bright 98% original nickle. The side snap opening lever shows approx. 70% original nickle with brown in the flaked areas. Nickle is flacked there but not pitted. Wood is fine, no major dings. Mostly just some small marks and 80% original finish. There is a 1 1/4 inch hairline crack right behind tang but it doesn't flex and stock fit is tight. Serial numbers match on forearm and barrel. Receiver is not numbered and does not appear to ever have been. The buttstock is nicely adornd by the factory with a fnacty gutta percha IJCo, (within a shield), pistol grip cap and finely checkered buttplate showing little wear, no chips or cracks. Mechanically fine and functioning. There is only a slight play in barrel lockup. A fine antique collectable IJ! And a WAY lowball NO RESERVE opener! Don't snooze on this one. NO FFL REQUIRED!
