A barrel insert for shooting .22Hornet cartridges in a 16ga breakopen shotgun. It is made by and marked "SEMPERT & KREIGHOFF GEWEHRFABRIK SUHL". The caliber marking is "CAL 16--5,6x35R D.R.G.M.". There is also a # 8153 stamped on it. Perhaps the serial number of the original gun it was made for.
The overall length is 12.75". The bore and chamber are excellent, no pitting or damage. The unit has it's own extractor that works off of the guns extractor/ejector. The barrel has 99% of it's blueing and the lettering is sharp so it's either a nice original blue or a first class re rust blue. Now the problem---it is missing the wedge and it's screw assembly that is used to position and tighten the barrel inside of the shotgun tube. You can see in the photos the double ramp type cut in the barrel where it sits along with the groove where the tightening screw is to be.
I imagine by tightening the screw, the wedge would be pulled toward the breech and therefore up the double ramp cut and therefore tightening the assembly securely inside the shot tube.
Also I believe there are 2 'pads' missing from the elongated cuts (2) which are 120 degrees each away from the wedge cut. These were probably nothing more than brass or leather. There are 3 small tapped holes in the bottom of each pad cut for their attachment. A unique accessory for a 16ga breakopen shotgun or drilling by a famous maker.
