COLT ~ NEW NAVY MODEL 1895
.41 LONG COLT, 4-1/2" BARREL
All Original & LOTS OF FINISH!!
NO RESERVE!! Here's a nice piece for the collector of early Colt double action revolvers. This is a Colt "New Navy" Model of 1895 double-action revolver that was manufactured in 1902. This revolver is chambered for the .41 Long Colt cartridge and wears the 4-1/2" barrel with fixed sights. The United States Army & Navy both used various versions of the Colt D.A. revolvers during the last part of 19th Century and the first part of the 20th (although in .38 caliber). This is the civilian version, manufactured for commercial sale, but was still known by the "New Navy" name. Unlike modern Colt revolvers, the cylinder has two sets of notches and rotates in a counter-clockwise fashion, while the sideplate is located on the right side of the frame.
This revolver is in very good, all original condition. The barrel has the correct markings for the period with the caliber stamped on the left side, the three-line address on top, and a small "41" under the ejector rod. The serial number is stamped on the butt (187304). The factory assembly number "459" is correctly matching, stamped on the inside of the frame, on the yoke, on the cylinder release, and etched on the backs of the original hard rubber grips. These revolvers were finished in Colt's most beautiful high polish blue finish but the finish was delicate and most examples show extensive finish wear. This revolver is far above average and retains about 90% of the original bright factory finish. There is some thinning to the finish on the grip straps and the sharp edges, as well as some areas of corrosion scattered about. Lots of the bright iridescent fire blue remains on the hammer, trigger, and various screws. The hard rubber stocks are in excellent condition with only light wear, no cracks or chips. The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order with good timing and solid lock-up with the trigger held to the rear. The bore rates very good showing mostly bright, sharp rifling with just a few small spots of shallow erosion...an 8.5 out of 10 and perfectly shootable. It comes with a Colt factory letter which verifies that it was shipped with the 4-1/2" barrel in .41 Colt caliber to M. Hartley Company, New York on August 22, 1902. It's interesting to note that the parent company, "Schuyler, Hartley & Graham" was the largest firearms dealer in the United States during the Civil War period. A nice, all original 115-year-old Colt revolver.
