COLT ~ 1911 SERIAL No. 260
RARE HIGH POLISH...Mfd January, 1912
ORIGINAL FINISH & CORRECT!!
NO RESERVE!! Here's a rare opportunity to own an American icon! This is an extremely early production Colt "Model of 1911 U.S. Army"...serial number 260!! This pistol was part of the very first order of 1911's order by the United States government and was manufactured in January, 1912. These earliest 1911 pistols featured a highly polished mirror blue finish with contrasting bright fire blued small parts. This finish was rather fragile and surviving pistols with much finish remaining are rare. The high polish blue finish was discontinued at serial number 2400. This pistol has all of the earliest features and is original and correct. The barrels in the earliest 1911 pistols were unique in that they were manufactured slightly differently than were all others. The slot between the barrel lugs was plunge milled in such a way that the link would not rotate and "fall to the back" during assembly of the pistol (an annoyance any 1911 owner is familiar with). This feature was discontinued early on in order to speed production. The barrel is unmarked, as is correct. Other early features include:
- The serial number is located on the forward part of the frame (through serial 7500)
- The magazine catch lock is concave or "dimpled" (issued through serial 3189)
- The stock screws have very thin heads and stock bushings are "tall" (through approx. serial 3000)
- The mainspring housing pin is convex on both ends (through approx. serial 6500)
- The recoil spring plug is not "punched" (issued through serial 6500)
- The recoil spring guide has the early "sharp legs"
- Round top rear sight
- Short hammer
- The "rampant colt" trade mark is found within a circle behind cocking serrations
- "Exposed base" lanyard loop magazine
This early Colt is in very good overall condition and retains the great majority of the factory original high polish finish. There is normal handling wear, of course, and the grip straps show wear and thinning. There are numerous small nicks and dings as well as a few dings around the right rear tang and a scratch near the magazine release on the right side. There is some surface etching to the top/forward/right side of the slide (between the ejection port and front sight) where is appears the pistol was in contact with some damp canvas and a small spot of shallow pitting to the left side of the slide below the "DEC. 19" patent date. There is no significant deep pitting anywhere except for a spot at the base of the magazine. Lots of beautiful fire blue remains on the trigger, safety, hammer, slide stop, mag release, extractor, ejector, and to a lesser degree, the rear sight. I'd rate the finish at about 80-85% overall. The diamond checkered walnut stocks are in very good condition with normal wear but no cracks or chips. I did notice that one of the four stock screws has been replaced with the "thick head" type at some point and the radius of the front sight appears to have been file just slightly lower. The magazine is in good condition with some minor corrosion but no dents or cracks. This beautiful pistol is in excellent mechanical condition and functions correctly. Even the bore is in excellent shape showing bright, sharp rifling and only a slight hint of frost...a 9 on a 10 scale!
Correct, early 1911 pistols like this do not come up for sale too often. This is an investment grade gun that would be the centerpiece of most U.S. military collections.
