Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked "BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST LOUIS MO. / SPECIAL STEEL 12 GAUGE - SHELLS 2 3/4" with a diamond and "BP" in oval, the right has another diamond and "PK". The left of the receiver is marked "BROWNING / TRADE MARK" with a bust portrait and the serial number, the receiver has tasteful scroll engraving.

Barrel Length: 30”

Choke: The barrel is fix choked about Improved Modified at 0.700" at the muzzle.

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a steel bead, screwed into the solid barrel rib; the top is matted for glare reduction.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two piece checkered walnut set with a rounded pistol grip and finger grooves running the length of the forend. The forend has heavy scrapes, compression marks and a crack on the underside. The butt stock also has heavy rubbing and scrapes, though no cracks are visible. The LOP measures 14 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the red ventilated rubber recoil pad; the pad is set with a black spacer, the stock looks to have been cut to accommodate the pad, made by Hawking. The pad is in Very Good condition as not original to the shotgun. The stocks rate in about Good condition.

Type of Finish: The shotgun is blued, with scroll engraving on the sides of the receiver, the top and rounds of the receiver are matted for glare reduction.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with a few spots of light frosting and persistent fowling.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 73% of its metal finish. The surfaces have scrapes and spots of light surface erosion. The receiver has freckling and hand rubbing, small sharp dings into the flanks are observed with some thinning on the rounds. There are no deep marks or major damages. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tooled. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Good Plus to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a magazine cutoff on the left front of the receiver, a safety at the front of the trigger guard and a bolt release on the right side of the receiver. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: From Wikipedia: “The Browning Automatic 5, most often Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by John Browning. The Browning Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun. Designed by John Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, it was produced continually for almost 100 years by several makers with production ending in 1998. It features a distinctive high rear end, earning it the nickname "Humpback". Browning presented his design to Winchester, where he had sold his rifle designs, but they refused his terms. He then went to Remington, but the president of the company died while he was waiting to offer them the gun. Browning then took the gun to FN in Europe, and was so confident of his design that his first order was for 10,000 shotguns. The design was later licensed to Remington for their Model 11 and to Savage Arms for their Models 720 and 755. During WWII, production of the Auto-5 was moved to Remington alongside the Model 11 until FN could resume production after the war.”. This is one of those Remington "American Browning" shotguns. Chances are you have either shot or owned an A5 before but chances are, it was not made in the U.S., making this one a nice chance to add a rare WWII era gem to the safe. Please see our pictures and good luck.
