Action Type: Single Shot, Muzzle Loading

Markings: The lock plate is marked with an “eagle”. The right side of the barrel is marked “RANSON ITALIA spa – made in Italy”. The left side of the barrel is marked “Black Powder only”, “1891”, “AA in side of a box”, “C.58”, “star / PN” and a “star over an unknown crest”. The left side of the receiver is marked with a “star over an unknown crest”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 32 ½”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a ramped blade. The rear sight is a three bladed “V” notch assembly. Each blade flips into place for different distances.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece dark hardwood with brass barrel bands, nose cap, washers, trigger guard, butt plate and side plate. There is a storage compartment under the side plate. The sling swivels are attached to the barrel bands. The rod stores in a cutout underneath the stock. There is a small hole in the left side of the stock that appears to be missing a pin. The right front of the stock, under the barrel band retainer, has a ½” x ¼” scratch. The top pistol grip area has damage from the hammer being cocked back. There are two scratches on the right side of the butt plate and one ¾” scratch that removed the finish next to the butt plate scratches. The area to the rear of the lock plate has compression marks in a 1” x 1” area. The remainder of the stock has some small compression marks and small wear marks. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright but needs a good cleaning. The rifling is shallow. There is erosion in the barrel.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 60% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear and frosting. The screw heads are disfigured. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.

Box, Paperwork& Accessories: There is one extra nipple stored inside of the butt stock. The rod is stored under the stock.

Our Assessment: The Remington 1863 Contract Rifle is also known as the ”Zouave Rifle”, or the “Harpers Ferry Pattern”. It was originally made from 1862 to 1865 and was one of the best designed rifles of the Civil War era. For more see: pg. 176 of Norm Flayderman’s “Guide to Antique American Firearms 9th Edition”. This rifle is a modern reproduction that is classified as an Antique.

UPS Insured shipping will cost $40. To reduce the likelihood of damage during shipping, we may disassemble long guns by removing stocks when it is possible & easy and will not damage the wood or screws. We will also break down takedowns. We have had problems with rough carrier handling breaking the stocks at the wrist, and since we have begun to disassemble, we have not had any breakage. All parts will be individually wrapped. If you would prefer to not have your item disassembled, please let us know as soon as you win the bid. We package all merchandise for shipment on the Monday following the sale.

Your item will be shipped within 1 week of receipt of good funds, usually the next day. You will receive an automatic notification with a tracking number upon shipment, to let you know that we have received funds. (Please obtain a tracking number from your carrier for immediate delivery confirmation of payment). If you are in Southern California, you are welcome to pick your item up and complete the transfer at our shop in Simi Valley (M-F, 8-4 and Saturday By Appointment).

This gun can only be shipped to a verified adult, and it will be shipped from an FFL. It is your responsibility to ensure that the gun is legal to own and receive in your area. Please include a copy of your driver’s license with payment; this is for proof of age. We are FFL dealers and comply with all Federal, State and local laws.

We always combine on shipping to save you as much as we can. You can generally assume it will be full shipping charge on the first item, 1/2 on the second, 1/3 on the third, etc. Exceptions only arise when the items are going to different locations (different licenses), or when they are exceptionally large, heavy or valuable and cannot be combined.
