Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “I.A.B. Gardone VT. – Made In Italy”. The left shoulder of the barrel is marked “Cal. 45/70 US.Gov.” The right shoulder of the barrel is marked “E.M.F. Company. Inc. CA.” The top tang is marked “43296”. The left side of the receiver shows 2 Italian proofs and a logo. The left side of the barrel shows 2 proof marks and a “BF” date code.
Barrel Length: The .96” (across the flats) octagon barrel is 29.25”.
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a brass bead front sight dovetailed into the barrel. There is a folding leaf sight mounted in a dovetail on the back of the barrel. It has a “U” notch blade that is adjustable for elevation. The tang is drilled and tapped for an aperture tang sight with holes approximately 1 17/32” apart.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece dark hardwood. The grip is straight, the forend checkered and the butt has a shotgun style metal buttplate. The underside of the stock at the toe shows several light compression marks, with a deeper mark forward on the right side. There is also a small compression mark on the left side about 3” in front of the heel. The underside of the forend shows compression marks in front of the checkered area. The checkering shows light wear, with a slight mar on the left side at the rear. The LOP measures 14 ½” from the front of the forward trigger and 13 ½” from the front of the rear trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.
Type of Finish: The barrel has a dull brown finish which may be the original color or it may be a patina that has developed – although with a 1995 manufacture date, this is not likely. The receiver, lever and hammer are case colored.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel shows a small mark on the left shoulder about 2” in front of the forend, and a slight discoloration around the rear sight. The edges of the barrel show light thinning on the edges. The rear tang screw is disfigured. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: This rifle has double set triggers. The rear trigger pull is rather stiff, but once set; the front trigger breaks lightly and crisply. The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a single shot modern replica of the Sharps rifle in Excellent condition. It is great for BPCS matches, although you will probably have to add a Soule type vernier tang sight to compete fairly. You can also win some long range matches at your local cowboy club with this. And, if you are a traditionalist who thinks that carrying a fast firing bolt action rifle isn’t fair to your game – then this makes the perfect elk hunting rifle. With a .45-70 case, it is possible to load a 400 grain jacketed bullet with enough powder behind it to exceed 2050 fps. (Do not try this with original Sharps rifles – the steel is not strong enough to support the pressures created). If this last option appeals to you, don’t forget to add a recoil pad or your shoulder may never forgive you.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California.
