LSB#: 130524GD06

Make: Marlin

Model: Model 39 Article II

Serial Number: 71 80046

Year of Manufacture: 1971

Markings: The serial number is on the upper tang. The right side of the frame has a plaque marked with an American Eagle and "Right to Bear Arms / 1871 * 1971". The top of the barrel is marked "Marlin 39 Article II / the Marlin Firearms Co. / NORTH HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A." The left side of the barrel is marked "Cal. 22 S, L, LR". The "JM" proof is on the right side of the barrel at the chamber.

Barrel Length: 24"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a dovetail set beaded blade and the rear sight is a dovetail set leaf and elevator sight, with the elevator retained.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are lightly varnished smooth wood with a pistol grip. there are scattered marks and dings, and some finish wear at the wrist. The Marlin Bullseye has fallen out of the belly. The LOP measures about 13 1/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the gold plated plate. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue with gold plated buttplate and forend cap.

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning on the top of the frame. There are many scattered freckles of surface rust and erosion. An attempt at cleaning this was made at the left side of the barrel at the forend and the top of the frame. This was a symptom of storing the rifle in a cloth case for too long . . . The plating is beginning to flake a bit on the cap. If not for the storage damage, this would be a very sharp rifle. The screw heads are crisp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This is a highly sought after lever action .22 rifle, from a limited production run. The Marlin Model 39 has served generations of shooter and hunters, and this one will serve the next generation with a bit of class. The condition flaws are simply cosmetic and this will make a fun gun to shoot.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred/sold in California.
