Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Custom Sako Model AIII Action -- .308 Norma Magnum Bolt Action Rifle

LSB#: 130429CB02

Make: Sako

Model: Customized with AIII Action

Serial Number: 531727

Year of Manufacture: 1978-1982

Caliber: .308 Norma Magnum

Action Type: Bolt Action with Hinged Floorplate Magazine

Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “SAKO AIII”, “531727”, with a logo and “RV”. The left side of the barrel is marked “308 Norma”. The bottom of the floorplate is engraved with a picture of an eland.

Barrel Length: 26”

Sights / Optics: The receiver has integral bases. There are no provisions for iron sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece hardwood (maple?) with a beautiful fiddleback pattern. Please see our pictures!!! The buttstock has a Monte Carlo comb with raised cheekpiece, a pistol grip that flares at the bottom, and a vented reddish brown rubber recoil pad marked “Pachmayr”. The stock shows light handling marks, with small compression marks at the heel of the butt and on the right side of the stock behind the grip. There is also a small chip in the finish on the left side of the stock at the heel. The cheekpiece has several spots of discoloration where something caustic dripped on the cheekpiece. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad, which is soft. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrel and receiver are blued, with an in-the-white bolt and bolt handle. The trigger guard and magazine floorplate are engraved.

Finish Originality: The barrel is not original to the rifle. The receiver finish appears to be original.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep with light wear. There is no erosion. Our bore gauge measured a ME of about 1.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its current metal finish. The barrel and receiver show light handling marks. There are spots of discoloration in the checkering at the back of the bolt, on the bolt handle, the body of the bolt and the extractor. The tang screws are disfigured. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Sako first started making rifles with FN Mauser actions in 1951. By 1961 they had settled on 3 different length actions. The long action designation, L61R, was changed to AIII around 1978. The Sako action on this rifle was re-barreled to .308 Norma Mag. and restocked with a beautiful fiddleback patterned wood. The belted .308 Norma Magnum was first brought out in 1960, but lost popularity when the .300 Win. Mag. came out in 1963. If you can’t find ammo in this caliber, you can always make your own by resizing .300 Win. Mag. brass. While it isn’t quite as powerful as the .300 Win. Mag., the Norma round still offers 2950 fps. performance with a 180 grain bullet, out-classing the .30-06 Springfield at 2700 fps. This is a beautiful looking engraved rifle in great condition and will make someone a nice rifle for elk and for long range shots on deer and antelope.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California.
