Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Goncalo Alves checkered target stocks with extractor relief cut and S&W medallions. The grips have only the lightest of handling marks and are otherwise like they were when they left the factory. The grips rate in about Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: Nickel
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is a very faint drag mark on the cylinder, some light handling marks and that’s about it. The forward face of the cylinder appears as if unfired. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. The hammer and trigger are nicely case colored. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent Plus condition.
Mechanics: The single and double actions function correctly. This is a Square Butt, “N” Frame with a pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, and .500” wide checkered target hammer and .500” wide serrated target trigger. We did not fire this handgun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A two-piece blue cardboard box with metal reinforced corners is provided. This box has no printing inside or out, but an end label that properly describes this revolver is included loose inside the box. The box and end label are both in Excellent condition. A finger-jointed luan mahogany presentation case with brass hardware is also provided. The exterior of this case is in Fine to Excellent condition with only a few light marks on the sides or top, while the bottom has several scratches and compression marks. The interior of this box has a molded plastic bottom insert and a foam top insert, which are appropriate for the time this revolver was made. The blue flocking is coming apart on both the top and bottom inserts. In “The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson” Supica and Nahas write “. . . all were covered with a blue flock material that deteriorated to powder over time.” There is a molded compartment in the bottom which has an S&W marked button on its lid. Inside the compartment are a loop style cleaning rod, bristle bore brush, bore mop and S&W screwdriver-all in like new condition. The flocking is coming apart and looks terrible, but the interior will look much better if the new owner simply brushes it all off and leaves the molded plastic bare.
Our Assessment: This is just about pristine, a nickel Smith & Wesson “N” frame that may have only been dry-fired. Make sure to look at the photos of this beauty. The front of the cylinder looks like it must have when it left the factory. We know that there are handgunners who hold a special place in their hearts for the .41 magnum, and this is one very special Model 57 with both box and presentation case.
