NO RESERVE!! Here's a nice example of a U.S. Military revolver that's becoming harder and harder to locate in original condition. This is a Colt Model 1909 U.S. Army revolver. This is a variation of the large frame Colt New Service revolver made for the military. The Model 1909 is chambered for the .45 Long Colt as opposed to its later more common cousin, the Model 1917, which chambers .45 ACP. Most of the production run of 22,000 Colt 1909's was shipped to our troops in the Philippines who were fighting insurgents and Moro tribesmen following the conclusion of the Spanish American War. The older Colt .38 DA revolvers had proved to possess inadequate knockdown power against determined attackers. The old .45 Colt cartridge proved much more reliable in this regard and the Model 1909 was adopted while the military continued work refining the 1911 automatic.
This revolver appears to be 100% correct and original. The right side of the frame is marked with army inspectors initials WGP (Walter G. Penfield) and R.A.C. (Rinaldo A. Carr). The R.A.C. inspection mark is also found on the rear of the cylinder, underside of barrel and on the bottom of each of the grips. The underside of the barrel is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY". It still has its original high polish Colt finish as well as the original walnut grips which fit perfectly and are serial numbered to the gun. The finish would rate about 92-93% overall with some thinning of the finish on the grip straps, some handling marks, and general edge wear. There is some scattered rust freckling as well as a small amount of old corrosion on the left rear edge of the frame and right edge and bottom of the trigger guard. The tropical environment in the Philippines was not kind to finish of firearms and most of the guns that returned from duty there show some evidence of service. The markings are all crisply struck and the screw heads are not buggered. The grips are excellent, free of cracks or chips. Mechanically, this revolver is in excellent shape. The timing is good as is the lock-up. The bore is also in excellent condition. This is a nice example of a completely original Colt Model 1909 U.S. Army revolver and would make a fine addition to a U.S. Military collection.
