Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece hardwood with a dark finish. The buttstock has a straight smooth grip and a black plastic checkered buttplate marked with a “Winchester” logo. The only marks we see are two compression marks in the forend. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is slightly worn. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. There is a mark on the left side of the barrel at the front sight, and pinprick surface erosion around the barrel bands and rear sight. The sides of the receiver show light handling marks. There is light pinprick surface erosion around the rear receiver screw head and around the screw heads on the top of the receiver. There is a mark on the right side of the lever behind the trigger. The screws in the top of the receiver are disfigured while those on the sides and tang are sharp (although some have erosion in the bottom of the slots). The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The side ejecting action functions correctly. The trigger pull is light and crisp. We did not fire this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes in a factory brown cardboard box with “Winchester” marked in red on the top. The box has several strips of clear and paper tape on the top and front edge where it had previously been taped shut. The box shows a few compression marks, but the corners are intact. It has a factory end flap which correctly identifies the make, model and caliber of this rifle. There is a box on the end flap for the serial number, and the number marked was crossed-out and the serial number for this rifle was written-in with ink. Overall, the box is in Fine condition. Also included with the rifle is the hammer extension mounted on the hammer. The knurling is sharp, and the extension is in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: The .44 Magnum chambering on this rifle is hotter than the .44-40 Win. blackpowder round, and that was known to have taken a lot of deer. It is certainly suitable for game up to deer size, especially in thick brush where the heavy bullets are not as easily deflected as smaller diameter bullets. This nice looking rifle would make a great gift for the younger hunter just starting out, but at 6 ½ pounds would also be a great deer rifle for us older types who don’t want to carry around a heavy rifle all day. This rifle can also be used in Cowboy Action shooting, either with .44 Special cartridges or with .44 Magnums loaded down below 1000 fps. with lead bullets.
