Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Ranger Model 30 Stevens 520 -- 16 GA Take-Down Pump Shotgun 28 in BBL - C&R OK

LSB#: 130201RG18

Make: Ranger (Stevens)

Model: Ranger Model 30 (Stevens Model 520)

Serial Number: U123153

Year of Manufacture: 1920-1932

Gauge: 16 Gauge

Action Type: Pump Action with Tubular Magazine

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “PROOF TESTED – 16 GAUGE / - 2 ¾ INCH CHAMBER” and the left side of the take-down lock-up is marked “123 / 153” and has an “SP” in an oval. The left side of the receiver is marked “RANGER” and “MODEL 30”. There is an engraving of a cowboy on a horse partly visible rising above the word “RANGER”. The lower tang is marked “U123153” and has a small sideways “Z”.

Barrel Length: 28”

Choke: Modified (?)

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a steel bead front sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered walnut. The forearm has a notable compression mark on the right side checkering and there is some finish loss on the smooth portion. Some of the pistol grip checkering is flattened and there are numerous compression marks and some finish loss. The LOP measures about 13 ½” from the front of the trigger to the back of the somewhat pliable ventilated red recoil pad. The stocks rate in about Good to Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is the start of a little erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 10% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows gray patina and pinprick surface erosion. There is also some surface rust that has raised above the metal. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Good to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, however the slide release lever is sticking occasionally. We have not fired this shotgun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This pump shotgun was designed by no less than John Browning, and has several design improvements over his previous pump shotguns. It has a very strong and simple take-down mechanism compared to the Winchester Model 97 and Model 12. It also has a very smooth and straight bolt/pump movement. The Ranger brand may have been sold by Sears, but Stevens sold the same basic gun as their Model 520. Stevens boasted in their promotional literature that “A Model 520 Stevens used in testing heavy loads by a leading manufacturer of shotgun shells has been fired over 100,000 times and is still in perfect working order.” These are workhorse pump-guns and still capable of harvesting game in the field or defending hearth and home.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible shotgun can be transferred in California.
