You are bidding on an H. Pieper Cape gun chambered in 12ga x 38-55 WCF. The gun has good rifling but the bore in the shot barrel is rough. Everything is In perfect working condition and locks up tight. Low pressure loads have been shot through the gun. barrels appear to be steel and are stamped Patented April 23, 1881, serial number is 16,###. I could not find a serial number chart my best guess is 1887-1890. It is a no frills hunting gun as you can see in the pics. the checkering is worn smooth and the wood is not of high quality. It is a nice, honest, original 120+ year old hunter. Here is what I know of H. Pieper: H. Pieper was Registered to the proof of the house of Liege (Belgium) from 1877-1898. Henry Pieper dies in 1898 and the company changed name to Pieper (no H.). Guns stamper H. Pieper are pre 1898. This Gun was made in Belgium for the US Market, hence the 38x55 WCF chambering instead of a European caliber. In my research this is the lowest serial number I have found among owners, I have read as about owners with guns in the 30,000+ serial numbers which is what I am base my manufacture date on (Patented in 1881 at 2500/yr (guess) lands around 1887. This is a cool gun!
