Model: Type 99 Last Ditch
Serial Number: 89131
Year of Manufacture: Late 1944/1945
Caliber: 7.7 Jap
Action Type: Bolt Action, Internal Magazine
Markings: The mum and type have been ground off. The left side of the receiver shows a series mark, and “89131”, and the symbol for Nagoya arsenal. The bottom side flat of the bolt and the extractor are marked “131”.
Barrel Length: Approx. 26”
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with “last ditch” sights, a front post with blade in slot, and a fixed rear “peep” type sight
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are standard smooth military wood. The Arisaka buttstock was manufactured in two pieces. The stocks were likely cleaned and re-finished, and show many dings and mars but no cracks or losses. The lower forend wood is loose. The LOP measures approx. 12 5/8”. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: The barrel may be original, and the receiver was refinished after the Mum and Type were removed.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp and deep. There is just a touch of erosion in the grooves. This is a great military bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 60% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning of the barrel and receiver and a gray/brown color on the receiver. There are rough tool marks scattered throughout under the finish. There does not appear to be any appreciable recent rust or erosion. The Screw heads are serviceable and show some disfiguration. The markings are clear but limited. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a good collector example of the Arisaka “last ditch” rifle showing the “peep” sight and straight bolt. It is indicative of the rushed process used to crack our rifles at the end of the war. This one has not seen much use and remains in good overall condition with a good bore.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R rifle can be transferred in California.
