Year of Manufacture: 1981. This rifle is listed in the ATF Curio and Relics Section II, page 32.
Caliber: .32-40 Winchester
Action Type: Lever Action Rifle (Large Loop Carbine)
Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked "John Wayne Commemorative". The left side of the octagonal barrel is marked "Winchester Model 94 .32-40 Win. / Made in New Haven Conn. U.S.A. Winchester Proof Steel". The serial number is on the underside of the frame and the Winchester Proof is on the barrel at the receiver. Both flats of the receiver are nicely engraved with The Duke's movies and scenes from the same.
Barrel Length: 18 1/2”
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a dovetail set front sight and a dovetail set leaf with elevator rear sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are nicely grained walnut showing sharp checkering and one patch of wear on the right side of the forearm. The stocks rate about Excellent and Near New condition.
Type of Finish: The receiver, lever, barrel bands, and medallion in stock are plated, and the barrel and magazine tube are blue.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The rifling is sharp and deep though showing some fouling from the factory test round. Our consignor was the original owner of this gun and claims to have never fired it. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This carbine retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows storage wear only in the form of slight surface marking to the more fragile plated surfaces and poor storage. There is one slight mark on the right side of the frame, at the hammer, and one or two other light marks to the lever. This is apparently from storage. The lever shows about 5 pinpoint spots of surface frosting that will clean, and the underside of the frame shows some surface erosion. This is just from a lack of oil... The lever and base of the receiver show slight internal wear from operating the action, but again, our consignor says this is an unfired rifle. The screw heads are sharp; unturned. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent / Near NIB condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this carbine.
Box & Accessories: The original box is included with this gun. The box shows light tatters and a few light creases, but is otherwise sound and complete. Also included is: the outer box and inner Styrofoam, Purchase Record Card. Instructions Manual, Warranty Page and the leather lace for the saddle ring.
Our Assessment: John Wayne stood larger than life on the silver screen, and just as tall in real life. During his long career, he appeared in more than 150 films, and audiences around the world recognized him as the one man who best represented the patriotic spirit of America. More than 25 years after his death, John Wayne still ranks among the top 10 most popular movie stars in the annual Harris Poll, and his movies continue to be viewed by millions of Americans, ensuring his status as a legendary American icon.
His commemorative rifle has become almost as iconic as the man himself, and have found themselves among the most collected of the Commemoratives, probably the most collected. This example comes complete as it was purchased off the shelf in 1981 (less the box of ammo). You’ll be hard pressed to find a better one.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California, and is C&R eligible.
