Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Custom Winchester Model 70 -- 6MM Remington Bolt Action Rifle Tjaldeen's Ca.

LSB#: 120716RJ05

Make: Winchester, Custom Built By Tjaldeen's Paso Robles Ca.

Model: Model 70

Serial Number: 137550

Year of Manufacture: 1950, though rebarreled, so not a C&R

Caliber: 6MM Remington

Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked "6 m/m - Remington". The right side of the barrel is marked "Tjaldeen's / Paso Robles, Calif." (We are not certain of the first letter). The serial number is on the right side of the frame, and the left side of the frame is marked with the Winchester Proof and "Winchester".

Barrel Length: 26"

Sights / Optics: There are no iron sights. This rifle is mounted with a one-piece Redfield base, with 1" scope rings and a flip up peep sight at the rear ring.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are very cool. I have never seen this pattern of wood on a Model 70. The wood is finished and checkered, though there is a full pistol grip and much tasteful tapering and feathering at the forearm, trigger guard and cheek piece. The wood shows much wear, with losses and chipping of the finish. There is age discoloration and additional marking throughout, but there is no splitting or cracking. The LOP measures about 12 3/4" to the end of the White Line recoil pad. The stocks rate in about Fair - Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Mix: Original Barrel, Refinished Frame, Original Trigger Guard and Magazine

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is a bit worn, but still sharp. There is no pitting or erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 50% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows much thinning on the barrel, especially forward of the wood. The frame shows just a few freckles of frosting, and also on the magazine. The magazine and trigger guard show edge wear and surface marking. The bolt handle shows thinning from use. The Screw heads are a bit worn, but very serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired the rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Scope rings and base are provided.

Our Assessment: 6MM is a Bench Rest and long range caliber if there ever was one. This was one of the earlier "1,000 yard" cartridges, and Tjaldeen found a way to get a great Remington Caliber on the best action - a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70. We are not certain who Tjaldeen was, though he definitely knew what he was doing and the work accomplished on this rifle shows that. This rifle certainly warrants further research, but would be a dream shooter as it sits.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California.
