The lower tang, trigger guard and left receiver flat are smooth to the touch with mild surface erosion. There are at least three dings among the top of the receiver and the barrel area where one can catch a fingernail. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This rifle is a take-down model using a large screw head on the right side of the receiver. We have not fired this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: One seven round magazine is provided. The magazine appears to be in about Fine overall condition.
Our Assessment: The Savage Model 1903 is unusual in that it is a pump action rifle that does not have a tubular magazine. Instead it uses a detachable clip style magazine that would appear at home with a bolt action rifle. It features a bolt hold-open feature when the magazine is empty. By removing the large screw head on the receiver this rifle can be taken down for compact storage or transport, and this also allows easy access to the chamber and bore for cleaning purposes. The Model 1903 is well made and reliable, with at least one example fired a documented 42,000 times at the St. Louis World’s fair.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California and is C&R eligible.
