Seller's Description

Guns For Sale - Colt -- U.S. Inspected SAA .45 Revolver C. 1881

U.S. Inspected SAA .45 Revolver C. 1881

For collectors of the Colt Single Action

Army revolver, one of the most desirable

specimens are those original U.S. contract cavalry weapons – the original .45 caliber government inspected revolvers with 7.5 inch barrels.

These weapons, first issued to the U.S. military carry inspector’s markings denoting U.S. government issue. Many of these early 7.5” specimens were turned back in to army and later Colt factory refinished with 5.5” barrels or similarly altered at the

Springfield Armory. These so-called ARTILLERY models had either all matching serial numbers, barrel number mismatched and the remainder matching or all mixed serial numbers. This specimen, is marked with serial number 73838 on most parts

and was originally issued in 1881. The cylinder bears the number 4407 while the backstrap is stamped 17076. This would be termed a TYPE I Artillery model.

Accompanying this purchase is the original Colt factory letter dated 1963. The revolver certainly has seen a great deal of use and although complete

and sound mechanically it has overall light pitting throughout the exterior. The Colt barrel address is still partially visible on top of barrel while the patent dates also

visible left side of frame. The major inspectors initials D.F.C. (for David F. Clark) is still visible on bottom of frame. The grips were replaced long ago and the bore is still

very good. A vintage revolver which dates back to original cavalry issue in the 19th century. Thanks for looking and please e-mail us with any questions PRIOR to bidding.
