This is a very nice, untouched, un-jacked-with Winchester 1890 chambered for .22 Short. Serial number 112426 places manufacture in 1900 according to polishing room records. This is a Second Model and one of the earliest blued receiver guns.
It appears that the hammer was originally case hardened.
METAL:
Absolutely original blue finish has faded to an even gray patina with some blue remaining in protected areas. The edges of the octagon barrel are straight and undinged with only typical wear. Barrel markings are correct for this year of manufacture, as are the tang markings. The screw slots are pristine and I doubt they have ever been removed outside of the factory.
WOOD:
Again, absolutely original with no cracks or chips. No evidence of ever having been sanded, the wood is flush with the metal and not below the metal surface. Look at the pictures. Some time, who knows how long ago, somebody inlet a small flower of white metal (tin?) into the left side of the buttstock. It is nicely done, with some detail of petals. Probably at the same time, a small star of silver metal was inlet into the bottom of the forend flanked by a bar on each side. One of the bars has been missing for a long time. This is definitely outside of the factory, but whoever did it had some talent. Imagine, this might have been a young girl's first rifle and her daddy painstakingly inlet these small decorations before giving it to her in Christmas of 1900. Maybe he then went on to the trenches of World War One and this rifle and the small flower was the little girl's fond remembrance of a loving dad.... sniff.... (OK, so I got carried away.)
BORE:
Some mild pitting and erosion, but the rifling is still strong and would certainly be shootable. About a 6 of 10.
MECHANISM:
Nice mainspring tension, mechanism certainly seems fine. We have not test-fired this rifle.
SO many Winchester 1890's have been messed with, changed parts, salt blued, etc, that is refreshing to find one in honest, original condition. The period embellishments, to me anyway, add to the personality of the rifle.
