Make: Page-Lewis Arms Company
Model: Model D
Serial Number: NSN
Year of Manufacture: 1923 - 1928
Caliber: .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle
Action Type: Manually Cocked Single Shot Bolt Action Rifle
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “PAGE-LEWIS ARMS COMPANY / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.”, “22L.R. Model D” and there is a stamping that resembles a bullseye, which lines up with a matching mark on the receiver. Also on the left side of the receiver “RELIANCE” has been stamped.
Barrel Length: 20”
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a half-penny blade front sight and a square notch rear sight that appears to be drift adjustable.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are wood. If the stocks were varnished, it has long been gone. There are numerous small compression marks, but surprisingly, no notable scrapes or gouges. The LOP measures 12 ½” from the front of the trigger to the rear of the butt, which was manufactured without a separate butt plate. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is almost bright and the rifling is shallow but good. There is no erosion and one minor ding near the outside of the muzzle crown.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows a brown patina. The screw heads are still reasonably sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition for its age and condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a “boy’s rifle” made before the Great Depression. It may well be the type of rifle your father, or even your grandfather had for his 1st rifle. Hopefully, during the depression it accounted for its share of small game for the pot. It is a little piece of affordable firearms history, made by a company later acquired by Savage/Stevens.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle is C&R eligible and can be transferred in California
