LSB#: 120615AM02
Make: Colt
Model: Model 1892 New DA Army and Navy. This is a "civilian model".
Serial Number: 283613
Year of Manufacture: 1900-1907. From “Colt Cartridge Pistols” by James Serven, the patent markings indicate the revolver was made before 1901, however, PROOFHOUSE.COM shows the serial number on the frame being produced in 1907.
Caliber: .38 Long Colt
Action Type: Singe and Double Action Swing-Out Cylinder (rotates counter-clockwise).
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “Colt D.A. 38”. The top of the barrel is marked “Colts PT. F A Mfg. Co. / Hartford, CT. U.S.A. / PAT Aug. 5, 84, Nov. 6, 88, Mar. 5, 95” . There is a VP proof symbol on the front of the trigger guard. The inside of the arbor is marked “3866” as is the arbor. The bottom of the grip frame is marked “283 / 613”.
Barrel Length: 4 1/2
Sights / Optics: This revolver has a groove in the top strap rear sight and a blade front sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are black hard rubber with Colt logos. There is no “Rampant Colt” which would otherwise have identified this revolver as an Army variant. As the grips are rubber, not wood, this revolver was made for the civilian market. The front bottom corner of both grip panels is broken off. The grips rate in about Poor overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: All Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is shiny and the rifling is sharp. There is very slight erosion.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 65% of its metal finish. Most of the blue is gone from the barrel and it has lots of small scratches. There is a round rust spot on the frame below the back of the hammer and slight surface erosion just that. The cylinder has a drag mark, many scratches, and the finish is worn from its front. One of the screw heads has a little damage to the slot but the others are undamaged. The markings on the side of the barrel are sharp, while those on the top are faint. Overall, this revolver rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly both single and double action. The cylinder lockup is slightly loose. We did not fire this revolver.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: The Army version of this revolver was used in the Philippines, and the lack of knockdown power in the .38 Long cartridge led to re-issue of .45 Colt revolvers and the subsequent adoption of the 1911. This revolver has a historic past and will make a nice addition to any Colt collection.
