Our Assessment: The S&W Model 19 with a 2 ½” barrel continues to be popular with many outdoorsman as the handgun carried for contingency purposes. It’s small enough to bring along and powerful enough to be worth bringing. As a self-defense gun, particularly for carry this is a very versatile and reliable choice. With the ability to shoot both .38 +P and .357 Magnum you have a wide selection of purpose made defensive ammunition available and few guns are more reliable than a S&W double action revolver.
