There is an "R" at the end of the bottom tang. There is a "R" on the left side of the receiver. There is an "NSP" stamp on the bottom of the forend, ahead of the frame. The bottom of the hinged breech block is marked with one "P" and one "D". There is a "M.M." on the right side of the take down lever on the right side of the frame. The left side of the breech block has two "P"s. There is a "W" on the barrel top ahead of the frame and a "Steel 1864" further forward on the barrel. There is apparently an "R.K.W" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. Nearly every part on this carbine is marked.

Barrel Length: 21" to the front of the breech block.

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a blade in a dovetail slot for the front sight and a 3 position rear sight leaf, mounted to a solid barrel mounted base. The leaf has a sight position when down fully and two positions when raised, marked "3", and "5".

The LOP measures about 12 3/4". Overall, the stocks rate in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue and case hardened

Finish Originality: All original, Guaranteed.

Bore Condition: The rifling is sharp and deep. The bore is shiny in patches, with scattered areas of erosion.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 75% of its metal finish. all metal parts show correct original finish. The case colors have faded, and the fire blue on the tangs is bright but with scattered surface rust mixed in. The barrel shows the vast majority of its finish, with scattered marks and age discoloration. There are a few dings and surface marks throughout. The saddle ring bar, saddle ring, hammer and hammer screw look replaced. The hammer looks to be a heavily patina'd original with pitting and the others are apparently new parts. The Screw heads are a bit worn, but very serviceable. The markings are all visible, though slightly light. Overall, this gun rates in about very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. the hammer cocks and the trigger drops the hammer. The breech block freely swings out of the frame when released.

Box & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This Burnside carbine is notable, not just because it's better than average condition, but because "Burnside" was a famous Civil War General who had to sell his interest in the company. This is the model made, sold to government and issued in largest quantities to Union soldiers (approx. 43,000 1863-1865). this gun was likely an arsenal mismatch from a rebuild, with a more contemporary collector adding the sling bar and hammer. Regardless, the condition is still far better than average. (see page 618 Flayderman's 9th edition).

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique rifle can be sold in California.
