Model: 500MILS. This gun is one of the 5,000 U.S. contract over-run Mossberg 500's. The government allowed Mossberg to sell these commercially, provided the serial number prefix was "U.S.A" and not "U.S." The trigger guard and the safety are aluminum - not plastic.

These marks are common on matte finished guns, and are not scratches through the finish. There is some wear on the magazine tube, a few rubs and two scratches on the barrel. This shotgun shows only a few rounds fired and mostly storage wear. The markings are crisp. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and feels quite good. We did not fire this shotgun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes with a May 2007 copy of the Bruce Canfield American Rifleman article on Mossberg Combat Shotguns. This shotgun also comes in its Mossberg box with lock and paperwork . The end flap of the box matches the serial number and description of the gun.
Our Assessment: As Bruce Canfield discussed in his article, this gun is one of 5,000 US Government contract over-runs, described exactly. As Bruce goes on to say, "Such guns are likely as close as today's collector will come to acquiring a military-issue Mossberg combat shotgun". These are the exact guns carried by today's soldiers on the front line. Collectors with WWI and WWII Trench Guns, and Vietnam Era pumps likely have a hole in their collection for the modern guns. This is practically the only way you'll be able to fill that hole.
Our consignor said that this shotgun came with a letter from Mossberg (which can no longer be found). The letter discussed 5,000 guns ordered by the Coast Guard that would not be needed. Mossberg sought and received permission from the Coast Guard to sell the guns commercially (provided the prefix was changed to USA). In summary, our understanding is that these guns were Coast Guard ordered shotguns, never delivered and then released for sale commercially.
