LSB#: 120611JM01

Make: Remington Rolling Block/ Re-barreled in France

Model: Rolling block 1874

Serial Number: NSN

Year of Manufacture: 1874

Caliber: 6.5mm Daudeteau/6.5 x 53.5mm . These rifles were rebarreled in France in 1894 for Uruguay from 11 x 60mm. Ammo for this rifle can be made from 7.62 x 54R.

Action Type: Single Shot Rolling Block

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with what looks like “S F a P / St Denis” in script. This is likely “Société Française d'Armes Portatives Saint Denis”. Part of these markings are inside the receiver. Please see our photos. The top tang is marked “ E. Remington & Sons Ilion N.Y. U.S.A. / Pat May 3 D 1864 May 7th Jun 11th Nov 12th Dec 24th 1872 / Dec 31 st 1872 Sept 9th 1873 Jan 12th Mar 18th 1874”. There is an “E” behind the upper tang

Barrel Length: 31 ¼”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a fixed post front sight and a stepped sliding ladder rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are military smooth wood. There are many nicks dings and mars but no visible cracks. The LOP measures approx. 13”. The stocks rate in about Fair overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue Barrel, Perhaps Plated Receiver

Finish Originality: Looks Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dull and the rifling is deep. There is erosion in the grooves.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 10% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows discoloration and brown patina on the bore with some mild surface erosion. The receiver shows splotches of plated finish and brown patina. The trigger guard is brown with light surface erosion. Please see our photos. The Screw heads are sharp and not disfigured . The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A cleaning rod is provided.

Our Assessment: There is an interesting story to this rifle. A man named Divitiis convinced the Uruguayan government to re-barrel their Remington Rolling blocks in France in the 6.5 Dardereau caliber. Divitiis was a bit of a charlatan and got the Uruguayan Government to let him re-barrel their 1871 Mauser rifles in France first and then tried again with Remington Rolling Blocks. Apparently the 1871 Mausers were of poor quality because of the ammunition and after some of these rolling blocks were manufactured the “agreement” was cancelled. IN ANY CASE this is a rare rolling block with some interesting history. If you are a rolling block collector this is a a rare find! Please see "The All New Collectors Guide to Military Remington Rolling Block Rifles of the World", by George Layman for more details. . http://www.littlegun.info/arme%20francaise/artisans%20s%20z/a%20soc%20fr%20armes%20port%20gb.htm

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique rifle can be sold to anyone 18 years of age with valid ID.
