LSB#: 120510JM07
Make: Smith & Wesson
Model: .38 Single Action 2nd Model
Serial Number: 40218
Year of Manufacture: 1877 - 1891
Caliber: .38 S&W
Action Type: Top Break Single Action Revolver
Markings: The rib on the top of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS.U.S.A. PAT’D JAN.17 & 24.65 / JULY 11.65. AUG. 24.69. JAN. 19. 1875. REISSUE JULY 25. 1871”. The face of the cylinder is marked “40218”. The bottom of the grip frame is marked “40218”. The underside of the top strap latch is marked “40218”.
Barrel Length: There are two barrels, one is 5” and the other 3 ¼”.
Sights / Optics: The revolver is mounted with a pinned round blade front sight on each of the barrels. The rear sight is a “V” notch on the top strap latch.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece grips are smooth and appear to be made out of bone. It also appears that the bottoms of each grip panel have been repaired. The grips rate in about Fair overall condition.
Type of Finish: Nickel
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore of each barrel shows erosion, presumably from black powder loads. The muzzle crowns are rough under the plating and the rifling is shallow but visible.
Overall Condition: This gun has been engraved and nickel plated afterwards, therefore it retains none of its metal finish with the possible exception of the case colored knurled hammer, knurled spur trigger and top strap latch. The screw heads are somewhat distressed with the exception of the grip screw which is likely new. The barrels top rib markings are difficult to read under the plating. Overall, this gun rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions when the trigger is pressed firmly, otherwise the hammer falls to the half cock position. There is also about 1/16” of play between the top strap and frame. We have not fired this gun, nor fitted the shorter barrel unto it. To fit the second barrel onto the frame it would be necessary to swap out the top strap latch from the other barrel.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This two barrel set is an interesting find, and showy looking with its engraving and shiny nickel plating. This might make a good gun for a western reenactor, especially one who plays a gambler or dandy.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This revolver is an antique, manufactured prior to 1892, and can be sold to anyone 18 years or older with a valid ID.
