Our Assessment: This rifle is some flavor of the Model 1911. Our research shows that the 1889/11, 1896/11 and 1911 had some of the features found on this rifle. The 1896/11 had an inlet pistol grip which this one does, the 1889/11 and Model 1911 have an 8” overall bolt length with 4 ½” from the back of the locking lug to the bolt face, which this one does, the 1911 had a pistol grip and flat buttplate, this one does not have a flat buttplate. So we think it is an 1896/11.Please see pages 274 and 275 of “The Standard Catalog of Military Firearms”, by Ned Schwing for more details. This rifle and its variants were used in both world wars and was produced through the 1930’s. This rifle has a achieved a reputation for exceptional accuracy and fine quality construction. This particular rifle is in good shootable condition and would enhance any collection.
