There is wear on the cylinder pin which is worn down under the knurling. There is some scratching around the latch pin, on both sides of the frame. The hammer shows nice case colors and a little pinprick erosion. The Screw heads are sharp, showing minor use. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, both single and double action. The lock-up is tight. We did not fire this revolver.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is a period coat pocket holster provided. The front side of the holster is marked “J.E. May / 850 Cass St. / Chicago, Ill”. The back of the holster is marked “221 / 38”. The holster shows frayed edges and some finish wear and loss of stitching but there are no tears or cuts. This holster is in Fair to Good overall condition.
Our Assessment: This is a cool old revolver in a large caliber and existing in unusually good condition. The finish is good, the bore is good and the cylinder chambers show little use. Lightning Express was a trade name used by Iver Johnson from 1896-1930, and the gun resembles the American Bulldog, Second Model as seen in the Goforth book. This particular revolver is a very good example and will be a significant addition to any collection.
